Our client is bucking the trend. This privately owned B2B organisation with a strong heritage retained its core values whilst transitioning to become a successful Omni-channel business; increasing their international footprint and delivering double digit growth. They continue their pursuit with boundless energy and spirit.
Their mission is to continue to grow the business globally; capitalising on the potential within the European market through further M&A, and identifying new commercial opportunities. With this in mind, it’s now time to hire their first Group HR Director to play a key role in preparing the organisation for this expansion. With currently c.1600FTE plus a contractor population, there is an expectation that this colleague group will rapidly triple in size.
Partnering the newly appointed CEO, this is an opportunity to contribute as a member of the SMT to the broader strategic commercial agenda, whilst taking ownership for creating and executing an aligned people strategy. The business is at classic ‘teenage’ stage of organisational development and the next 12/18 months will see a focus on; investing in and improving the infrastructure, and uplifting skills and capability. This will cultivate collaboration and enhance a holistic Omni-channel proposition, improving their customer experience and ensuring their organisational readiness to scale.
EVP development and Talent Management will certainly be key priorities; implementing a talent identification and development plan that will review existing capability, and proactively attract and retain new talent. Creating structured career paths, development and mobility opportunities will help engage, challenge and stretch high potential colleagues and build robust succession planning. Increasing capability within the leadership cohort will be achieved through the design of both bespoke and team solutions, supported by continuous coaching for individual development. Maturing the broader L&D proposition to offer fit-for-purpose, value-add, blended programmes (across technical, soft skills, first line management).
Building upon their performance management culture, it’s critical to ensure managers are equipped to manage performance and employee relations effectively. Continuing to develop an appropriate compensation and benefits strategy across their increasingly diverse population will be key to driving high performance and rewarding a universal orientation. This will be underpinned by the design and execution of a strong internal communications and employee engagement strategy and programme. Maturing meaningful HR reporting will help stakeholders understand opportunities, challenges and issues, and this will also provide a foundation to commence a D&I strategy. This can only be achieved through the effective leadership and development of the HR team (c.20).
We’re thrilled to be working with the CEO as a retained partner in this search and we are hoping to achieve shortlist stage in December, ideally with the successful hire in a position to commence in role in Q1.
We are looking for an HRD with experience of progressing a career within multi-site, fast paced and high growth commercial environments with international operations. This will include exposure of working within an organisation with Omni-Channel activities and an understanding for the associated complexity this can present. Retail/FMCG/B2B/B2C orientated businesses typically provide this exposure. Experience of operating and achieving scale within a privately owned business is important, but ideally this will also have been accompanied by time spent within a larger organisation – exposure to variable environments and talent will have promoted continuous development and innovation, and an opportunity to fuse an assortment of methodology, skills and expertise. Creating and executing a people strategy with impactful results will be evident; refining current practices and maturing organisational development and effectiveness to have achieved aspirational goals. Solid knowledge across the generalist agenda is paramount (including international employment legislation), together with a deep expertise in building a leading edge Talent programme across the employee lifecycle that has delivered consistent and robust succession on an international scale. The successful candidate will be a strong communicator with the ability to engage and influence colleagues at all levels within the organisation, embracing their appetite and eagerness for future individual and organisational growth.
Whilst a bachelor’s degree of business related equivalent would be advantageous, the personal fit is the priority here. It’s a fantastic team and we’re looking for someone who is energised, curious, and courageous to challenge the status quo and adept at galvanising new ideas and solutions. Gusto and determination will be balanced with critical thinking capability and pragmatism, and all will be underpinned by a set of strong personal values and high integrity.
It’s a genuinely exciting opportunity to be a part of the team leading this next chapter. The practicalities; HQ is in the South West, but their footprint is international and their UK operations are spread across the UK. We envisage a 70% HQ presence with UK featured travel and flexibility to work from home or remotely. International travel = c.6 x European trips and 1 x Long haul trip per annum.
